  1. GTS/WIS to WIS2 transition

Rémy Giraud

Rémy presented his slides on the transition from GTS/WIS to WIS2:

  • Replacing the real time data exchange (the GTS) by the new method (WIS2 messages and download) between members

  • Replacing/updating WIS1 technical solutions

  • Upgrading/replacing Message Switching Systems  in their exchange with local systems

  • Overarching principles of GTS to WIS2 transition

  • role of GISCs in transition to WIS2

  • The transition from WIS1 to WIS2

2. Discussions

all

Jeremy> The RTHs shall continue there Hub role until the the full migration of WIS2 by 2030

Peter> if a NC move to to WIS2 and stop publishing data to GTS how can we make the data missing to the GTS?

Remy> This is the role of the gateways. What we need is to agree on the number of gateways needed. No necessary that all RTHs run a gateway

Peter> not necessary to be RTH for running a gateway. A gateway may be a part of WIS2. Before stopping the AMSS services, need to have the gateway in operation

Remy> Agree, the principle is no lost of data during transition

Weiquing> What do you mean by AMSS local use?

Remy> In Meteo-France we use the AMSS to distribute the data and products for national use (national applications)

Timo> Need to consider how WIS2 in a box can interface with the local applications. For the GBON data they can also come from the existing stations witch are already in the GTS

Remy> Two separate discussions:

  1. transition from WIS/GTS to WIS2

  2. How to interface with local applications: I don’t think that we can do it for all local cases

Kai> We need to consider a deadline for GTS leaf

Hassan> In priciple 2, I think that some NCs will continue using their AMSS for their national use even if they switch to WIS2. I propose to add “stop AMMS for international use”

Peter>Are all the GTS links TCP/IP? If someone is moving to WIS2 this will impact the AMSS

Remy> Yes, I wonder to avoid modification on AMSS because of someone is switching to WIS2

Peter> I think if any Center is moving to WIS2, He will continue to provide data to GTS in the transition phase

Weiquing> What AMSS is providing is a bulletin generation component with different information described in volume C1

Enrico> Don’t base it on volume C1. To make a good solution, we need first to understand how AMSS works, and then build a mapping to WIS2

Weiquing> I don’t say to base it on volume C1, It’s the bulletin which is based on volume C1. I think also that the transition to WIS2 is not a big bang

Remy> It can be a big bang for the switch of. The WIS2 to GTS gateway is complex, I propose to trigger a discussion with the GTS experts

Peter> Some countries as proposed by Hassan will continue to use the AMSS for their national applications, they can also continue to provide the data for GTS.

Remy> Based on the discussions we need to asses this 2 proposals:

  1. All AMSS continue with the GTS distribution in the transition phase

  2. WIS2 to GTS Gateway

Weiquing> Need to distinguish between providing data and getting data.

Shows example of bulletin with different messages

When we move to WIS2 we need to provide notifications to the Global Services and the bulletins to the GTS

Remy> What I propose as a principle is that you are not requested to provide the bulletin, some gateway will provide it

Peter> We can imagine to send GTS bulletin to WIS2

Enrico> That means that the AMSS will not stop

Peter> AMSS to international can stop

Weiquing> If we provide bulletin and data to the global service It’s duplication

Remy>the duplication in Global Cache is not a problem. the size of GTS data is not very big. But I think we need first to explore the 2 options then decide

Hassan> I think to have this two parallel system is a risk of WIS2 implementation. If all NCs provide data for both GTS and WIS, may be the migration will never stop

Enrico> Agree, to have a mapping WIS2 to GTS is the best solution. Let’s start to explore It and then we decide

Kai> I think we can use the parallel run WIS2 and GTS with a deadline and some KPI’s to decide for the migration

Remy> I propose that Experts on GTS provide some slides for next week ( Weiquing, Peter and WMO)

Weiquing> I will provide my thoughts for next week
