Reports from related Expert Teams and Task Teams
ET-DRC @Ge Peng (Unlicensed) @William J Wright (Unlicensed)

  • William has made a lot of progress on HQ-GDMFC manual

  • 5 new appendices

    • summary of all relevant reference documents and reference standards

    • we may want to include something similar in the IM guide

    • new items as well, celebration of centennial climate stations and recognition of extreme climate records.

  • Draft can be shared if requested

  • WMO No. 49

    • Paragraph on climate data management added.

    • Considering a RRR process for updating and keeping aligned data and information related documentation (that could be relevant to climate data management).

TT-CDM (@David Berry )

  • New task team to develop data model for representation, archival and exchange of climate data.

  • Proposal for task team will go to InfCom management committee for approval

  • Provisional team members contacted

  • William, data model proposed will be built around WMDR standard.

@Ge Peng (Unlicensed)

Do we want to explicitly include references to WMO standards, e.g. WMDR. @William J Wright (Unlicensed) To some extent we have started but can go further and we will return to this later in meeting.

Review and discuss the draft document

@William J Wright (Unlicensed) , general comments

  • All relevant WMO documents should be referenced, link to manual on codes, WIS, WMDR etc.

  • Add appendix summarizing current relevant WMO guidelines documents.

  • A few things missing

    • guidance on air quality data

    • how to manage model data and information

    • definitions, do all met services know what is meant by DOIs etc.

  • Cross reference stewardship maturity matrix.

    • Should we link to in some form.

    • This goes through all the main facets of data management.

    • Good examples of some of the things we are interested in, e.g. retention policy.

      • Struck by how good UK Met Office retention policy was. BoM also developed a good one based on that.

@Ge Peng (Unlicensed) this particular document is draft, we do need to provide one for review some time in January. We could touch on some of these in the draft and then finalize after January. For example retention policy, recent discussion with other agencies. Different organisations have different ways of doing it, a common point we can make is that organsitions have a retention policy and highlight some of the things that should be included.

@David Berry Secretariat to work through document and identify where those links can be made. We will also add in appendices as place holders for things like example data retention policy, data management policy etc.

@William J Wright (Unlicensed) to share appendix summarizing the regulatory policies.

@Ge Peng (Unlicensed) Is there something similar for ocean data?

@tim.boyer (Unlicensed) IODE best practices repository. This contains many different documents for all ocean communities.

@Ge Peng (Unlicensed) the WMO has the manual on HQ-GDMFC, is there a similar high level document for ocean data.

@tim.boyer (Unlicensed) there are the documents that describe the marine climate data system (WMO 448 & 571). Tim will check for IOC and GOOS.

@Ge Peng (Unlicensed) Also data quality, assurance etc.

@tim.boyer (Unlicensed) QUARTOD (spelling and link) relevant for ocean.

@David Berry Kevin O’Brien has been looking at GOOS cookbook / guide to data management.

@Axel.Andersson (Unlicensed) do we want to define what we mean by information in the abstract, e.g. information is data in context. Something short.

This suggestion met with agreement from participants.

@William J Wright (Unlicensed) We probably need a statement that the generic term information refers to both data in the traditional context as well as the higher level information that puts the data into context. What do we mean by information management and how do we distinguish from data. This should be included in the introduction.

When we refer only to data we will use the term data. When it can involve both data and information we will use the term information.

Request for everyone to add comments to google doc version (to be shared by @Ge Peng (Unlicensed) )

Further discussion and comments in shared document (see https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ue0s-b14849tXkpx5yDkJpjYadRLBHlniAQrwmXIgXk/ ).

Look to finalize draft in early January prior to next meeting.
