2 | Discussion |
(Lucy): We are making progress. It is great to monitor the stations remotely. I wonder how the data control is managed? Our goal is to get the data assimilated to the models. (Enrico) The data control will be implemented next Monday. Now it is open only for demonstration for you. From next Monday, access protection will be deployed. From next Monday, the data will be only access using access token. We will share with you the access token by email later on. We also want to connect Climate data. OpenCDMS is a project to provide access to all the CDMS. WIS2box can connect to ClimSoft to get some data with access control. Via the web, data will be accessed anywhere. For climate data, it will be great that Secretariat has the database access for statistics of the standard normals. (Lucy) It is good that we have the data access control. (Enrico) We can also help you to get data for data assimilation. As soon as the data arrives at wis2box, it can be exposed with API. All the software is now installed on the Amazon cloud. We suggest it in the cloud. There is also the possibility to install on Malawi’s side which needs maintenance and good internet connection.
(Lucy) Is cloud service for free? (Enrico) The Secretariat is paying the clound service until the end of the year and it will probably be funded by SOFF. About 1500 dollars per year now. SOFF will start soon to supoort the observation. SOFF will pay for the cloud and observation maintenance. You don’t need to share all the stations using WIS2box, but with the data access control, a number of stations selected to be open and unrestriced. What you need to do is to prepare a list of stations that are open. Other stations can be internally used. (Lucy) Does the Cloud service need the internet to access? (Enrico) Yes, and with the box, you will get the data from ECWMF, it is more efficient to run the system. (Lucy) Any different sources of cloud? (Enrico) The cost on the observation will be funded by SOFF. For the model, it will be from Word Bank. Any discussion is welcome.
Lucy agreed with the current approach of Malawi WIS 2.0 Demonstration Project and agreed that the Secretariat to present the Malawi WIS2box at the INFCOM-II (24-28 October, 2022) |
3 | Xiaoxia | To give an update on the current data exchange in Malawi

4 | Discussion | (Lucy) Battery replacement is important but can not guarantee when it will be done, and there is not a big problem of reporting interval modification in OSCAR for the 44 AWSs. (Amos) Network problmes: Stations that have changed to JustWorks (using AirTel Network) still experience the similar accessibility problems. This is due to the persistent power outages. We will try to keep in touch with the service providers. |
Action items
- Secretariat to set up a meeting based for further discussion depending on Lucy’s availability
- Malawi colleagues to replace the battery and get updated regarding the OSCAR Reporting Interval modification
Decisions
- Lucy agreed that the Secretariat to present the Malawi WIS2box at the INFCOM-II
