round table: Brief self introduction

2

Alan&Kevin

  • Alan: Status of the network of stations

    • how to support Pacific neighbors , focusing on climate data

    • 40-50 stations to be installed in vulnerable countries, and then help transfer the data to GTS.

  • (Kevin) leverage the plaforms and bring more observations

    • portals (catalog) South Pacific, Cook Islands, Norway,

    • synoptic observations: every 3 hours per day

    • goal: modernize the data exchange to meet GBON requirement

3

Enrico

  • Briefing the status of GTS&WIS2

    • GTS is old with many problmes

    • start experimenting new ways for data exchange, Malawi from AWSs, to be sent to server by MQP, deployed on the cloud

    • WIS2 Demonstration Workshop was held in September

    • WIS2 in a box, BUFR conversion is needed, publishing tools will be included, data can be found via Search Engine. It will be the open source software. Technical regulations can be followed by NZ Met.

    • different quality control on climate data, delayed of data tranfer is acceptable for climate data while NWP requires real-time data exchange

    • preprocessing pipeline could be also served for climate data

    • it is great to collaborate with New Zealand Met.

Discussion

  • Graham

    • many of the stations on Pacific don’t go to GTS

    • future standard from WMO will be our guide

    • quality control: weather vs climate , differently

  • Enrico

    • Data model: producers upload data to the server, consumers reach data via search enginee, and they can subscribe to the data. When there is new data, a notification will be received.

    • Standardization: the subscription process, notification message

    • Technical regulations, implementation reference for wis2node in a box will be provided.

    • Tloud technology be applied, docker containers be deployed

    • It is possible that more preprocessing and quality control (more complex for climate data) to be added.

  • Graham

    • access control?

      • (Enrico) data catalog be accessible not only by GISC, but also by search enginees

      • subscribe service at 2 levels, 1) people are required to register 2) no registration.

    • process

      • (Enrico) run by broker, intermediate processing point, no complex topology, one jump is good. Resilience will be

    • cloud based system will be funded by whom?

      • (Enrico) be funded by WMO Members, service is cheap from cloud providers

    • (Enrico) WIS2 aims to lower the barrier

  • Alan

    • most of the climate data are stored on the cloud by BoM

      • (Enrico) climate data exchange OpenCDMS project: a data model between CDMS.

    • timeline for the project

      • (Enrico) The project starts now, from existing open source software, using BUFR/ecCODE, e.g. ECCC is providing MQP, ECWMF provides BUFR conversion. The first box to be implemented by next spring.

      • (Hassan) the first step to collect data from stations in real time, the process and quality control is easily develped later on. So, the first step is to collect data, and then convert data, monitor data.

      • (Enrico) how to participate the project from NZ side

        • (Kevin) we have experience in cloud based technologies, Amazon AWSs. Region V, new working groups on infrastruct and service will be created, working on implementation WIS2.0, WIGOS. Such project can fit intot he work plan of the Region V.

      • (Enrico) Technologies for WIS2.0 are matured. The approach is to start from the small number of stations and then deployed within a region. Set up a project firstly.

      • (Alan) circulation of details of WIS2node in a box would be perferrable.

Actions

@Enrico Fucile to provide more information about WIS2.0node in a box
to start with the concept note for the new project

Decisions

  1. To set up a project in which NZ will participate as the main player.
