Meeting agenda
Fast-track process; proposed updates and target dates
Formalisation of documentation for WIS2 alerting and monitoring - focus on practical information provided in the Guide, with updates to the Manual coming later (noting that as we’re not asking WIS2 Nodes to provide metrics only organisations providing global services and/or sensor centres are impacted)
“Lifecycle” of technical guidance - i.e., what do we publish to the “cookbook”, to the Guide, to the Manual; and when/if we should “promote” technical information from cookbook->Guide->Manual
Meeting Note
Fast-track process; proposed updates and target dates
In response to a question regarding the Fast Track (FT) plan, Anna confirmed that it includes two cycles per year, scheduled for February/June and May/November. She emphasized the need to implement the changes as soon as possible, ensuring approval by the SC-IMT chairs before submission to the focal points.
Regarding the publication of WIS documents on GitHub, the meeting agreed on the following approach.
Approved documents will be published in the main branch.
Proposed changes will be managed in separate branches via pull requests.
Once reviewed and approved, changes will be merged into the FT branch before final integration.
Discussion on Metadata-id in Fast Track (if it can meet FT-2025-1 schedule)
(Enrico) It is important to know changes implementation impact
Formalisation of documentation for WIS2 alerting and monitoring - focus on practical information provided in the Guide, with updates to the Manual coming later (noting that as we’re not asking WIS2 Nodes to provide metrics only organisations providing global services and/or sensor centres are impacted) https://wmo-im.github.io/wis2-monitoring-events/standard/wis2-monitoring-events-DRAFT.html#_conformance
Decision: it is agreed to add a new appendix to WIS2 manual to be approved by INFCOM-4 (2026) and endorsed by Executive Council.
Action: Global Services are requested to review, internally agree on, and implement the document by autumn this year, without waiting for formal approval at INFCOM-4 and endorsement by the Executive Council in 2026. It is highly recommended that Global Services operators proceed with implementation as soon as possible
“Lifecycle” of technical guidance - i.e., what do we publish to the “cookbook”, to the Guide, to the Manual; and when/if we should “promote” technical information from cookbook->Guide->Manual
A discussion raised on the cookbook published on GitHub https://wmo-im.github.io/wis2-cookbook/cookbook/wis2-cookbook-DRAFT.html
It has been agreed that this is an important document, and we should focus on finding ways to consolidate it with additional recipes.
Regarding the client-side filtering for data subscriptions in WCMP2 part, it was agreed that this paragraph “ 3.4. Advertise client side filters for data subscriptions in WCMP2 and WNM”” to be implemented as soon as possible, not to wait for two years to implement.
Decision : this part shall go for FT-2025-2, to be an update in existing appendix WCMP2 in WIS2 manual, one additional recommendation of link
Action: ET-WISMD to review 3.4 part and draft a proposal for FT
Question: is the current wis2 cookbook ready for consumption by the public? (Answer: the cookbook still an informal document)
GM Dashboard for GISCs
The dashboards have been updated in accordance with the recommendations from the ET-WISOP meeting in December 2024.
The dashboards can be accessed via the following links:
https://gm.wis.cma.cn/ (Username: gisc_user , Password: (to:be:shared:in:Email))
http://wis2gmc.marocmeteo.ma/ (Username: gisc-user, Password: (to:be:shared:in:Email))
Summary: Both dashboards look identical.
Action: to present this dashboard at the next ET-WISOP meeting for all the GISCs to check
Action: to share the user and password of both GM Dashboard with ET-WISOP
Testing environment
Decision: keep the Global Services test environment alive (do not switch off now)
Q&A
(Steve) need to know who are the primary users of WIS2? (A: Rémy: NWP centres are the first WIS2 users)
How to track the users? (Answer: tracking can be done through metrics such as the number of users and the number of downloads, along with detailed download statistics. Additional metrics may need to be developed for further insights, but this is not a priority at the moment)
Monitoring should address this, and if there are too few active observers, steps will need to be taken to engage more users
(Tom) whose data is cached, it is valuable for data producers to know how the data is used, and how much data is used.
(Rémy) centres publishing data + all NWP centres are using WIS2 data + more users (debatable)
(Rémy) different levels: first level of WIS2 success: to switch to WIS2; 2nd level is: all NWP centres are using WIS2 data.
Agree :It was s agreed that we should measure the users of WIS2, not just the volume of data in the Global Cache, but also the volume of data downloaded from the Global Cache
Actions:
ET-WISMD to review 3.4
Global Services operators to review the document and internally approve this doc by autumn this year noting that this doc will be approved by INFCOM-4 and endorsed by EC in 2026 . It is highly recommended for Global Services operators to implement it.
Secretariat/GM to present this dashboard at the next ET-WISOP meeting for all the GISCs to check
Secretariat to share the user and password of both GM Dashboard with ET-WISOP
Next meeting
10 February
