Presentation of the WIS2 everything list

Remy presented the WIS2 everything list Kanban · WIS2 - the everything list (github.com), which is the list of issues related to WIS2 and organized in 8 categories: to be closed, urgent, for ET-W2AT meeting, for end of Pilot phase, for INFCOM-3, for performance testing hackathon, for end of Pre-operational phase, and later 2025+

Remy, asked all the participants to have a lock at the list and check if everything is there and be sure that anything important is missing.

Enrico informed that the 26th of January 2024 is the deadline for the submission of the documents to INFCOM-3

(Action): Hassan to send an email to all the ET-W2AT meeting participants in Washington to review the list and provide proposals before the meeting

Merge of the country and Center-ID

Remy presented the proposal (https://github.com/wmo-im/wis2-topic-hierarchy/files/13074092/wis2-topic-hierarchy.pdf) from the WIS metadata team related to the merge of the country and center-ID in the topic hierarchy merge country and centre-id · Issue #58 · wmo-im/wis2-topic-hierarchy (github.com). He indicated that the idea is to remove country and define the centre-id on reverse hostname notation (starting with TLD) .

4into a single compound level.

Maaike highlighted that for the wis2box implementations a new release is required to integrate this changes in the Topic Hierarchy (TH)

Kai and Kenji agreed with the proposal but need to discuss with the development team to agree on the timeline for the implementation of this upgrade

Enrico, indicated that not only wis2box that are concerned, but also the custom implementations and some of commercial solutions

Remy, confirmed for Global Broker, in particular the France one, it will not be a problem to process the new TH. and asks about the ECMWF that can be ready in few weeks, shall we ask them to use the old or new TH.

Enrico, advised to wait until to have all the changes ready and ask for upgrade, if more changes are expected

Remy, mentioned that, mainly it will be only this one

Anna, INFCOM-3 is going to approve the guide to WIS and then we will have the final version approved of TH

Remy, INFCOM-3 will not change the structure of the TH, it will approve what we propose. (Rémy) expresses the concerns about potential delays if we wait for the INFCOM-3 approval.

Remy, propose to start the new TH for ECMWF and for the Caribbean WIS2 node and asked Kai and Kenji if it’s not a problem for the cache

  • (Kenji) expresses agreement with the proposed changes and readiness to adapt to the new TH structure

  • (Kai) DWD can handle both situation, either migrating to the new TH or following the current TH with a mixed topic structure

Kai expressed to add the implementation of the new TH as mandator for the pre-operational phase.

  • Migration timeline

    • (Rémy) proposes: starting the migration on 2nd of January 2024. Acknowledges the importance of synchronizing the migration start with the pre-operational phase.

    • (Kai) emphasizes that the transition is a must for joining the pre-operational phase and it is necessary to inform all the Members.

    • (Kenji) needs to evaluate the impact of the change with his software team.

    • (Rémy) proposes a transition plan: Cache A be ready as soon as possible for the change: Cache B or C stay the same with the current system until the last WIS2 node migrate

(Action) Remy to send an email to the Global Caches asking them their plan for the transition

WIS2 transition guide structure

  • GTS to WIS2 gateway

    • (Kenji) confirms that JMA will play such a role

  • WIS2 to GTS gateway

    • (Hassan) mentions that Brazil, China and UK to provide the WIS2 to GTS gateway

(Action) Hassan to send out the current WIS2 transition guide structure for the participant to ET-W2AT in USA to review to make sure no items are missing.

Guide to WIS structure

(Action) Hassan to send out the current WIS guide structure for the participant to ET-W2AT in USA to review to make sure no items are missing.

✅ Action items

  •  Hassan: to send out a reminder to all participants to attend ET-W2AT (13-15 November, USA) 1) to review the current Kanban · WIS2 - the everything list (github.com) before the meeting in USA. 2) to confirm the current structure of WIS2 Guide and WIS2 transition Guide, to make sure no missing items
  •  Rémy: to send an email to three Global Cache operators (DWD, JMA, SYNOPTIC) regarding the transition plan of merging the country and center-id, asking the operators to confirm their readiness (time needed) to support at least one option.
  •  Kenji and Kai: to evaluate the impact of changes on the software systems regarding the merge of country and centre-id and confirm when the transition can begin.
  •  Participants

⤴ Decisions

  • To determine a communication mechanism with all the wis2node operators about the change of Topic Hierarchy (merge country and centre-id)
  • Agrees the proposed transition plan, ensuring each Global Cache only needs to support one system during the transition period. (Cache A is ready for transition as soon as possible; Cache B or C stays the same as the current system until the last wis2node migrates)
